Job Description:
The Chief Photographer leads, guides and supports the Photographers, Editors and Truck Operators and the newsgathering efforts of the team to ensure the highest journalistic and technical standards.
Job Responsibilities:
- Drive news vehicles and operate production equipment.
- Shoot and edit content across all platforms (including but not limited to News 12, News 12.com, News 12+).
- Troubleshoot and find solutions for technical, equipment and operational problems.
- Assist with planning of news coverage and special events in coordination with managers.
- Lead with and instill a positive attitude, good temperament and collaborative spirit.
- Assist with establishing standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure a smooth newsgathering process. Oversee the maintenance and organization of all electronic newsgathering equipment including cameras, lights, accessories, backpacks , TOC and editing gear and news vehicles. This includes vehicle maintenance and registrations. Work with Engineers as needed.
- Manage the schedules of photographers/editors to meet coverage needs, including to reduce overtime and temp usage.
- Assist with recruiting and hiring and training staff.
- Respond to breaking news and other urgent newsroom situations as required.
- Write and conduct annual appraisals for the Long Island staff.
Job Requirements:
- Knowledge of applicable laws related to newsgathering.
- Flexibility to work any assigned shift.
- Carry and lift gear of approximately 50 pounds for extended periods of time.
- Commitment to journalistic standards of ethics and accuracy.
- Outstanding photojournalism skills.
- Proficiency in news production equipment and computers.
- Valid drivers license with a good driving record.
