Job Description:
To support the delivery of the external media strategy for our UK region, promoting and protecting the British Council’s reputation through the UK media. The Media and Campaigns Manager supports the development of creative PR approaches for broadcast, print, digital and social media, and the development of campaigns focussed on our UK region to reach people in the UK and showcase the British Council’s cultural relations work around the world. They also offer reputation management support to colleagues focussed on the UK and promotes best practice approaches to media management.
Job Responsibilities:
- Proactively builds and maintains collaborative relationships with internal peers and stakeholders to ensure integrated, joined up and future-proofed working.
- Maintains external networks to access, absorb and apply professional best practice back into the British Council’s approach to communications and engagement during transformational change.
- Supports the planning and co-ordination of UK media relations activities as part of integrated corporate communications.
- Contributes to team systems including the 24/7 out of hours rota and delivering and refining the daily news alert, monthly media reports, and media database.
- Keeps abreast of the UK news agenda and identify positioning opportunities or reputational risks, working with the Senior Media and Campaigns Manager to ensure relevant colleagues are fielded or briefed as appropriate.
- Employs targeted or bespoke analytical approaches to understand audience needs and enable informed campaign planning and decision-making.
- Distils complex concepts and analysis into cogent and persuasive media relations content, which convincingly influence members of the media about British Council positions or practice.
- Supports the Senior Media and Campaigns Manager to builds an in-depth understanding of the operational context, opportunities and challenges facing their internal stakeholders, and of how those relate to wider issues in the UK media, to ensure the development of new strategies and campaign ideas that will deliver business objectives.
- Provides professional advice, support and challenge to internal stakeholders and other partners with the support of the Senior Media and Campaigns Manager.
- Develops professional networks with media and external peers to enhance own knowledge and expertise.
- Plans, delivers and evaluates proactive UK media relations campaigns for our UK region, aligning with wider team resource planning and strategy.
- Contributes to building and maintaining the reputation of the organisation in the UK media, guiding colleagues on reputation opportunities and risks.
- Consults closely with internal stakeholders and other partners to understand current and future business needs and plans work activities accordingly to ensure the services and advice they provide meets those demands.
- Supports and makes recommendations to improve ways of working that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the corporate functional discipline, as well as the operational effectiveness of internal stakeholders.
Job Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent level of experience
- Demonstrable experience of proactive media relations or content creation to support business objectives
- Experience of developing relationships with high-profile journalists, across print, digital and broadcast media, and working with them to deliver impactful coverage.
- An ability to identify and give guidance on managing reputational risks
- Experience of training and guiding senior colleagues and creative specialists on working with the media and interviews
- Experience of working with communications teams in partner organisations on joint projects to ensure that all partners achieve their communications objectives on a shared project.
