Job Description:
To support the delivery of the external media strategy for Strategic Business Units (SBUs), promoting and protecting the British Council’s reputation through the UK media. The Media Manager supports the development of creative PR approaches for broadcast, print, digital and social media, to reach people in the UK and showcase the British Council’s cultural relations work around the world. They also offer reputation management support to globally and promote best practice.
Job Responsibilities:
- Supports the Senior Media Manager to builds an in-depth understanding of the operational context, opportunities and challenges facing their internal stakeholders, and of how those relate to wider issues in the UK media, to ensure the development of new strategies and campaign ideas that will deliver business objectives.
- Develops professional networks with media and external peers to enhance own knowledge and expertise.
- Plans, delivers and evaluates proactive UK media relations campaigns to be determined in accordance with the Senior Media Manager and wider team resource planning and strategy.
- Contributes to building and maintaining the reputation of the organisation in the UK media and in the global network, guiding colleagues on reputation opportunities and risks and preparing accordingly.
- Proactively builds and maintains collaborative relationships with internal peers and stakeholders to ensure integrated, joined up and future-proofed working.
- Maintains external networks to access, absorb and apply professional best practice back into the British Council’s approach to communications and engagement during transformational change.
- Supports the planning and co-ordination of UK media relations activities as part of integrated corporate communications.
- Contributes to team systems including the 24/7 out of hours rota and delivering and refining the daily news alert, monthly media reports, and media database.
- Distils complex concepts and analysis into cogent and persuasive media relations content, which convincingly influence members of the media about British Council positions or practice.
- Supports and makes recommendations to improve ways of working that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the corporate functional discipline, as well as the operational effectiveness of internal stakeholders.
- Keeps abreast of the UK news agenda and identify positioning opportunities or reputational risks, working with the Senior Media Manager to ensure relevant colleagues are fielded or briefed as appropriate.
- Builds positive relationships with key journalists and media influencers, ensuring reactive media enquiries are responded to quickly and effectively.
- Provides professional advice, support and challenge to internal stakeholders and other partners with the support of the Media Manager.
- Employs targeted or bespoke analytical approaches to understand audience needs and enable informed campaign planning and decision-making.
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrable experience in managing and mitigating digital communications risks and issues
- Degree or professional qualification in marketing, communications or business or demonstrable level of equivalent experience
- Significant experience leading a digital communications function within a large and complex understanding
- Deep understanding of digital communications best practice and trends
