Job Description:

Provide support in the shaping and stewardship of the pension risk management infrastructure of UK and Europe, to support effective risk and capital management of pension risk, by establishing and maintaining assessment mechanisms, oversight of capital and stress testing calculations, governance and guidelines for management of pension and benefits risks. The role covers all plans in the region with priority for the UK, followed by Germany, France and Channel Islands:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise in review and challenge of internal and external stress testing for plans in the region
  • Carry out the 2nd line review, challenge and oversight of pension activities in the region, in line with HSBC’s Risk Management Framework and pension risk policy, to ensure comprehensive and effective risk management;
  • Assess, for UK and Europe, the top and emerging pension risks in the region for escalation to the appropriate risk and pension committees;
  • Provide technical expertise in reviewing and challenging of economic capital calculations and methodology for the region and ensuring optimal use of group and regional capital
  • Support effective and efficient governance of pension risk in UK and Europe with focus on the UK Scheme; this includes monthly or quarterly reporting of the UK and Europe pension risk maps, top and emerging risks, regular review of the pension risk appetite statements, risk and control assessments, risk management framework, etc.
  • Provide preparation of regular risk updates for governance committees including submission of risks on the Pension Risk Maps and Pension
  • Risk Appetite Statements for both HSBC UK Bank plc and HSBC Bank plc and their subsidiaries as appropriate;
  • Act as Secretary to the UK & European Pensions Risk Management Meetings, helping shape their agendas, co-ordinating papers for submission and producing materials including meeting packs and minutes;
  • Provide technical expertise in monitoring accounting and local funding and investment strategies

Job Requirements:

  • Pension capital risk management including regulatory stress tests and economic capital methodologies desirable
  • Experience of funding and investment issues for defined benefit plans essential
  • Project / risk management experience an advantage
  • Experience of providing Secretarial support to committees an advantage
  • Experience with pensions accounting rules, especially IAS 19, essential
  • Proactive self-starter with ability to prioritise competing demands
  • Understanding of HSBC’s overall business and culture, particularly large company governance requirements, an advantage
  • Experience of all aspects of defined benefit and defined contribution corporate pension plans essential
