Job Description:

The Relief Veterinarian performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Relief Veterinarian provides routine and urgent medical and surgical care, and assures animals are shipped safely. This position reports to the Veterinary Clinical Operations Manager.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and analyzes pathology records
  • Prepares and maintains medical records
  • Conducts and participates in animal inspection rounds with staff and other departments
  • Coordinates/consults with other zoological veterinarians
  • Prepares reports
  • Adheres to all SDZWA and department policies and practices
  • Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics
  • Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards
  • Provides medical and surgical care at a location
  • Participates in establishing policies, procedures, and standards
  • Conducts physical examinations
  • Collects blood, tissue, and secretion samples
  • Forms diagnoses and develops treatment programs
  • Performs emergency and scheduled surgical procedures

Job Requirements:

  • Work with teams and effectively with others
  • Current California driver license in good standing is required
  • Communicate effectively (verbal and written)
  • Use word processing, database, and spreadsheet systems
  • Regulations affecting zoological institutions
  • Experience caring for the medical needs of exotic animals and qualifications to handle controlled substances
  • Perform surgeries
  • California licensure as a veterinarian is required
