Job Description:

The Veterinary Clinical Operations Manager provides direct supervision and development of assigned veterinarians, in addition to tending to the clinical needs of the collection. The Veterinary Clinical Operations Manager works collaboratively to identify and address collection health issues and supports SDZG conservation work both in situ and ex situ. The Veterinary Clinical Operations Manager contributes to the organization by providing subject matter expertise to support operational needs. This is both a leadership and management position with the responsibility of ensuring a positive work environment, and that the hospital runs efficiently while serving the needs of the organization. This position reports to the Director of Veterinary Services.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee administration of Program of Veterinary Care
  • Provide clinical oversight and expertise to the Veterinary Services Department
  • Provide veterinary management of routine clinical procedures, medical, emergency and critical care case management, and certification of health in a variety of non-domestic and domestic species
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to perform as necessary to help the practice function as a unit
  • Communicate, both written and verbally, in an effective and respectful manner amongst all levels of the organization
  • Proficient in decision making and delegation
  • Actively participate in intra- and interdepartmental collaborations aligned with the mission and vision of the organization
  • Participate in the development and revision of policies, procedures, and standards
  • Have budgetary knowledge and resource allocation to support financial responsibility within department and organization
  • Passionately advance the professional standards for zoological medicine in a way that positively impacts the conservation of wildlife and nature
  • Adhere to all San Diego Zoo Global and departmental policies and procedures
  • Supervise, mentor, and coach assigned staff
  • Communicate objectives and build and maintain morale to promote productivity and engagement amongst employees and teams
  • Collaborate with departmental managers to ensure effective clinical operations and cooperative working environment

Job Requirements:

  • A valid California veterinary license (or become licensed within 6 months of employment)
  • USDA category II Accreditation (or become USDA Category II accredited within 6 months of  employment)
  • A valid California’s driver license (or obtain a license within 3 months of employment)
  • Must be able to obtain a DEA license within one year of hiring
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Knowledge of regulations pertaining to veterinary medicine and zoological institutions
  • Ability to work in a multi-faceted, fast paced environment
  • Ability to apply critical thinking in problem solving
  • Understanding of effective leadership principles
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize resources effectively
  • Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback
  • A DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited institution or ECFVG certification
  • American College of Zoological Medicine diplomate status
  • A minimum of ten years of zoological medicine experience or equivalent
