Job Description:

We’re looking for an experienced safety professional who will help design, implement, and continuously improve safety assurance, auditing, and assessment programs for our autonomous programs. As an early leader in this group, you will be reporting into the Global GM for AM&D and will be matrixed into Uber’s global Safety organization. In this role you will be responsible for helping to define, tailor, and elicit conformance to safety standards, evaluating and improving our partners’ abilities to build innovative products that advance safety for all road users. This role will involve strategy, program management, and partner engagement responsibilities with a strong focus on cross functional collaboration.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Engage with policy makers, regulators, and industry groups to discuss Uber’s commitment to autonomous vehicle safety and refine aspects of our approach, always seeking to incorporate and advance the state of the art
  • Build lasting, productive relationships based on a foundation of mutual respect and shared commitment to safety with the leading organizations bringing autonomous mobility and delivery solutions into reality
  • Implement a comprehensive and pragmatic strategy for the vetting of potential partners’ approaches to safety
  • Oversee all safety aspects of the early integration and ongoing operation of autonomous vehicles on our global platform, from initial pilots to global scale-up
  • Collaborate with many different functional teams across Uber, including engineering, product management, legal, policy, and other safety teams
  • Initiate creative ideas for demonstrating our commitment to understandable and appropriate levels of safety for autonomous vehicles on the Uber network
  • Work with researchers and partners to understand customer perspectives (using quantitative and qualitative data) on autonomous vehicle safety
  • Thrive in an environment of significant responsibility, making smart judgements in spite of ambiguity and defending them to executive leadership

Job Requirements:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in program planning, establishing metrics, developing roadmaps, and designing processes without a template
  • A minimum of 12 years experience in automotive or transportation system safety
  • A pragmatic, continuous improvement mindset coupled with irreproachable core principles regarding the priority of safety
  • A passion for creating inspiring and innovative transportation solutions in pursuit of positive outcomes for the world
  • Familiarity with functional safety, operational safety, safety management systems, safety cases, safety critical software development, and Agile development processes
  • Experience working cross-functionally, with external partners, and with governmental entities
