Job Description:

Responsible for the development and execution of all Safety strategic goals for the Heartland Market Area in accordance with Waste Management Safety Services guidance. Role covers 46 hauling sites, 45 post-collections sites, 5 MRFs and 4 container repair sites in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. Manage and mentor driver trainers.

Job Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for the oversight and improvement of cost of accidents & injuries, return to work programs and mediations
  • Directs and coordinates the implementation and maintenance of emerging Safety tools and adherence to Safety standards.
  • Mentors Safety talent to ensure execution or key initiatives and development of next generation talent within the Area.
  • Monitors and deciphers market conditions, Safety trends, and the effectiveness of Safety actions for opportunity to improve results.
  • Responsible for leading Safety improvement efforts for all facets of the business, utilizing experience and relationships in all lines of business.
  • Owns the Area Safety plans completely and drives execution to exceed expectations.
  • Develops Safety as a strategic capability by maintaining focus and ensuring proper resource allocation within the Area.
  • Works closely with the Waste Management Safety Services Safety team to develop Safety strategies and implementation plans, and directs the execution of such plans.
  • Counsels other Area directors and managers as to execution of Safety programs (i.e. OJT and SAFETY Training), including alignment and impact on other department goals with ultimately goal of making the best decisions for the business.

Job Requirements:

  • Leadership potential including ability to influence up, down, and across the organization
  • Proven track record of consistently delivering safety results
  • Demonstrated ability of hiring and developing talented individuals both within Safety and/or throughout the Area
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proactive initiative to drive safety initiatives in the Area
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree (accredited) or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four years of relevant work experience
  • Experience: Ten years of prior work experience (in addition to education requirement) in Safety or Operations Management including at least three years managing a team of two of more individuals.
