Join a team that designs, develops and integrates highly complex systems for space within Honeywell Aerospace. As a Lead Optical Systems Engineer you will part of a team that specializes in the design, development and manufacturing of novel, state-of-the-art optical instruments for military, space and commercial applications, including Earth observation, atmospheric monitoring, space situational awareness, space science, and optical communications. You will be integral in creating system solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. You will be involved in every aspect of the systems life cycle; from the front end of business development through product end of life.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Providing technical support to business development activities, including customer briefings and conference presentations
  • Technical readiness and risk analysis assessments
  • Develop system level and sub-system level requirements and specification documents working with the optical, electrical and mechanical design teams
  • Develop program level documentation according to space agency standards (ie. Canadian Space Agency, NASA and ESA).
  • Leading design verification activities
  • Writing proposals and white papers
  • Provide technical leadership on optical instrument development programs as part of a highly engaged and integrated engineering team involved in all aspects of design, assembly and test activities
  • Design and analysis of end-to-end optical systems for space, including defining system architectures and system requirements to meet customer requirements, defining and selecting appropriate designs through leading trade studies, and developing system-level models and performing simulation and analysis to ensure end-to-end performance requirements are met

Job Requirements:

  • Individuals who are self-motivated and able to work with little supervision, who consistently take the initiative to get things done
  • The ability to adapt as dictated by project changes
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Science
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant system design experience in a systems engineering lead or technical lead role
  • Experience using requirements management tools, such as DOORS
  • The ability to manage technical teams with engineers, scientists, and technicians from multiple disciplines
  • Advanced degree in engineering or applied science
  • A strong background in leading optical instrument design activities, including optical, mechanical and electrical engineering aspects
  • Familiar with space instrument design considerations and standards, including grounding, cleanliness, and material selection and the associated environmental conditions, including thermal, vibration, shock and radiation
  • An understanding of optical design and test methods and familiarity with optical design software
  • Knowledge of the system development lifecycle
  • Individuals that quickly analyze, incorporate and apply new information and concepts
  • A strong grasp of optical, mechanical, electrical and software elements and their interactions within complex systems
  • Experience using system level simulation tools, such as MATLAB
