An excellent career opportunity is currently available for an Advanced R&D Engineer/Scientist in the Process Design & Development group within Honeywell UOP’s Research and Development organization located in Des Plaines, IL. This position affords a unique and visible opportunity to develop engineering solutions for new process technologies from their inception in R&D through the commercialization stage.

Job Responsibilities:

• Develop material balances for new process technology concepts based on preliminary yield & performance estimates
• Use commercial process simulation software to establish the basis for the evaluation and optimization of design concepts
• Perform CO2 emission and life-cycle assessment evaluations of technologies
• Identify novel design concepts and author invention disclosures
• Apply engineering design practices and standards to perform preliminary sizing and costing of major equipment
• Interface with engineering specialists and vendors to generate preliminary designs and cost estimates of specialized equipment
• Perform techno-economic analyses of process concepts including the assessment of key parameters impacting process profitability, safety, and reliability
• Generate basic engineering design packages to facilitate the rapid transfer of new process technology from R&D to Engineering production
• Identify and lead development and implementation of new tools and methodologies to further improve the process deigns development capabilities at Honeywell UOP
• Support competitive technology analyses, exploratory projects, and growth initiatives

Job Requirements:

• Strong interpersonal skills and the capability to work effectively across multiple functional departments
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with a strong focus on delivering results and identifying alternative solutions when challenges arise
• Familiarity with life-cycle assessment calculations and reviews
• Experience in project execution including planning, organizing, monitoring, and successfully completing multidisciplinary projects
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to ensure all aspects of projects are clearly understood and well documented.
• Willingness to learn new technologies
• Relevant Chemical Engineering graduate school may be considered in lieu of experience.
• 5+ years of experience in a Technology, Engineering, Research & Development, or Technical Service role within the refining, petrochemical, gas processing, or renewables industries
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
• 2+ years of experience in a Technology, Engineering, Research & Development, or Technical Service role within the refining, petrochemical, gas processing, or renewables industries is required.
• Knowledge of chemical engineering fundamentals including fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, and reaction engineering
• Experience in process engineering, including development of heat and material balance, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and process design specifications
