First directs strategy is to double the size of first direct by fighting the unfairness holding back the younger generation in the UK – bringing to life a new fd – fd2.
The head of commercialisation and strategy role is a key leadership role that will operate across propositions, channels and functions and closely with the fd CEO office and UK Retail Banking Strategy team. The role will report directly to first directs head of banking and propositions.
The Banking & Proposition Team is at the heart of first direct, bringing together the needs of first direct customers with the banks proposition, portfolio strategy and the commercial returns that the bank is aiming to achieve.
This is an exciting new role that will promote and be accountable for first directs commercial outcomes and continuous evolution of its strategy in line with UK strategy, global standards and regulatory requirements.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Define and deliver a strategic plan to translate fd focus on scale into profitability
  • Oversee and provide execution assurance to all of first directs commercial outcomes, embedding clear outcomes and key results across value streams, propositions and product lines
  • Continuously evolve first directs strategy over short, medium and long term including developing internal and external investment case’s to radically improve first direct
  • Lead first directs trading rhythm and governance
  • Externally represent first directs strategy and commercial performance across UK bank, Global and external market stakeholders
  • Ownership of strategic initiatives that develop new revenue opportunities that deliver to our purpose but diversify our revenue mix in an increasingly tough margin environment (eg marketplace)
  • Definition and orchestration of first directs finance and resource plan (FRP) and high level prioritisation of investment

Job Requirements:

  • Strong navigation skills – can close the gap between high level strategic support from investors and turn it into tangible roles, budget on the ground and with the teams
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills; an ability to communicate with impact, ensuring complex information is articulated in a meaningful way to wide and varied audiences
  • Ability to create follow ship and can influence culture –fd needs to be “culturally commercial” across functions, value streams and product lines
  • Be an effective team player with a proven ability to build strong relationships across stakeholder groups and able to influence and communicate across various business lines and units in order to deliver a common goal.
  • Strategic thinker – can connect purpose and strategy through to the right actions across propositions journeys with strong knowledge of digital, data and technology foundations that will make fd competitive
  • Strong “hands on” analytical and presentation skills. Able to represent fd’s story and commercial performance at all levels external to fd
  • Commercial acumen – prior experience in managing a P+L across an area of retail banking
