San Diego Zoo Jobs – Merchandise Sales Clerk

Job Description:

The San Diego Zoo’s Retail Department is seeking friendly, cooperative, and motivated employees. Must be able to work 5 days per week, which include weekdays, weekends (Saturday AND Sunday), holidays and evening shifts. Must have good mathematical skills. This position requires standing for extended periods of time. Periodic heavy lifting up to 40 pounds and cleaning and maintaining all areas and equipment. Scheduled work hours will vary, approximately 15-30 hours per week.

Job Responsibilities:

• Performs related duties and responsibilities as required
• Registers sales
• Rents and maintains strollers and wheelchairs
• Provides information to the public or directs to a knowledgeable source
• Adheres to all SDZWA and department policies and practices
• Orders above items as necessary and maintains an inventory
• Makes change
• Cleans and maintains sales displays and sales area
• Assists merchandise buyer
• Keeps prices clearly posted and updated
• Demonstrates operation of appropriate merchandise
• Sells merchandise items
• Keeps sales items in stock and on display
• Explains related history of merchandise
• Opens and closes registers

Job Requirements:

• Background/history/operations of merchandising
• Prior work experience in a high volume, fast paced Food Service or Retail environment desirable
• Deal tactfully and courteously with the others in a diverse environment
• Zoo and Safari Park rules and regulations
• Understand and communicate effectively with the public
• Merchandising methods and register practices
• Understand and carry out instructions
• Foresee needs and maintain stocks before depleted
• Operate a cash register accurately and efficiently
