Job Description:
The Wildlife Care Supervisor is responsible for and oversees all aspects of the welfare, safe care, and handling of an assigned wildlife collection and contributes to collection strategic planning. The Wildlife Care Supervisor is responsible for the daily supervision of the staff and the routines to ensure safe care and handling of an assigned wildlife collection. This position reports to the Wildlife Care Manager.
Job Responsibilities:
- Oversees the wildlife husbandry training program for the assigned wildlife areas to ensure that proper procedures are being followed and priorities are being properly identified and tasked.
- Ensure the implementation of documented enriched experiences throughout the assigned areas with a focus on enhancing the 5 Opportunities to Thrive
- Evaluates, adjusts and coordinates husbandry standards and techniques applied to an assigned animal collection according to a zoological master plan
- Ensures the wildlife welfare standards are upheld and improved upon where necessary according to the SDZWA Wildlife Welfare Policy.
- Regularly attends daily Vet Rounds and ensures proper communication with the Veterinary Team on medical cases and health status of animals within assigned areas.
- Plans, oversees, and implements the wildlife husbandry programs, reproduction, neonatal care/chick rearing, introductions, moves, restraints, and shipments
- Leads, manages, evaluates, and develops the performance of animal care staff as assigned
- Ensures area Standard Operating Procedures are updated on a regular basis
- Frequently inspects and observes assigned collection for overall health and welfare
- Ensures dietary requirements of the assigned collection are met and fulfilled
- Discusses morbidity and mortality with veterinary and pathology staff and addresses and identifies concerns
Job Requirements:
- Exotic wildlife management and husbandry skills
- Effective organizational communication and team building
- Wildlife Welfare
- Basic taxonomic knowledge
- Carnivore and/or Primate experience is preferred
- Lead or Supervisory experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology, Animal Science, or a related field
- Valid California Driver’s License
- 4-6 years’ experience managing an animal department and personnel in an AZA accredited zoo or equivalent facility
- 4-6 years’ hands on exotic wildlife care experience
