Job Description:
The Manager Underwriting will develop and implement departmental procedures and maintain high quality standards to ensure Underwriting efficiencies. This individual will develop departmental control expenses within the budget and oversee the assignment of underwriting authority to their reports. They will establish controls to monitor ability to accept risks and determine pricing. The Underwriting Manager will establish audit and monitoring procedures to ensure adequate review of underwriting files.
Job Responsibilities:
- Balance customer, business and/or health plan needs or requests
- Evaluate, Create, Implement Process Improvements
- Ensure consistent interpretation and application of Underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures
- Stay abreast of and communicate changes in Underwriting policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations
- Provide consultation and guidance to internal and external stakeholders on Underwriting processes, methodologies, and practices
- Communicate with internal stakeholders (e.g., actuarial team; product group) to prepare for case/Delegation of Authority (DOA) review
- Set team direction and motivate and train employees
- Manage financial commitments while balancing persistency/client retention
- Provide guidance to team members and problem resolution
Job Requirements:
- Effective personal communication skills in the areas of listening, speaking, and writing
- Bachelor’s Degree in Math, Finance, Business or related degree
- Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
- 3+ years of experience with healthcare underwriting for any variety of products: PPO, HMO, self-funded, ASO/fully-insured, group or individual
- Solid analytical, problem solving and critical decision-making skills
- 3+ years of leadership experience
