Job Description:

Career/Consulting Engineer – Technology Applications Center (TAC) position is responsible for managing and operating the TAC infrastructure as required by the AIC Modernization Acton Plan (MAP) as well as identifying technology solutions that could improve the utilities electric distribution system in the future. The preferred location for this position is the Champaign/Urbana area, however, the Bloomington, Decatur, or Mattoon Operating centers will be considered.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and approve Ameren and Vendor sponsored technology solutions for testing at the TAC. This includes development of test scope, assessment of infrastructure requirements, and creation of testing contracts that define test/analysis plans, cost estimates and labor requirements.
  • Review technology solutions hardware, software and network communications requirements against exiting TAC/microgrid infrastructure capabilities. Develop and submit proposals for infrastructure improvements/integration to enable technology solutions testing. This includes integration to existing TAC systems such as ADMS, IPERC, etc.
  • Creation of quarterly TAC reports as required by the Energy Infrastructure and Modernization Act.
  • Review utility industry trends and identify potential technology solutions to be tested at the TAC.
  • Develop relationships as well as identify collaboration/partnership opportunities with other technical research entities (EPRI, DOE, Universities, etc.).
  • Assess technology solutions cybersecurity risk level and work closely with Ameren’s cybersecurity department to mitigate solutions risk through infrastructure/architecture change requests.
  • Obtain technical and operational (including economic) understanding of TAC and microgrid components.
  • Engage Ameren’s IT department to research new developments, trends in network communications & security and create practical solutions that can be tested within the TAC infrastructure.

Qualification & Experience:

  • A minimum of five or more years of electrical systems engineering experience required. Engineering of utility electrical systems is preferred.
  • Ability to script or program in at least one language (e.g. Perl, Python, .Net, Java) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity risk mitigation strategies (e.g. network intrusion detection, event log monitoring, vulnerability management etc.) is preferred.
  • Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university required. Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Salary depends upon individual credentials, experience, and position market pay level. Internal incumbents currently in the existing or similar career path will be considered only as lateral transfers.
  • Three or more years of experience with standard network infrastructure technologies (switches, routers, firewalls, etc. and networking protocols is preferred.
  • Experience with utility scale communications protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, ICCP and GOOSE is preferred.
  • Experience with utility scale power electronics (smart inverters, energy storage, etc.) is preferred.
